The Walk The Talk Group’s (WTTG) concept that the creative arts are not only an end but a means to an end was seen in a choreo-poem in live concert, a campaign against child mortality on the 30th of July, 2016 at the Korlegonno Community Library in Accra.

The Korlegonno Community Library established in 2014 was initiated by a Canadian, Kathy Knowles and is one of a number of Community Libraries scattered around in Madina, Mamprobi and Nima. This is to promote  literacy and joy in reading in the community.

The WTTG still holds the view that performing choreo-poem is the future of today’s poetry. It was therefore not surprising to see them use it in their campaign. In collaboration with the Kathy Knowles Theatre Co., WTTG made their first public appearance in the community with their advocacy against child mortality in the country. Child mortality is a menace. This campaign against it is to ensure it’s brought to an appreciable level, although the country has recorded a reduction in the rate of death. Earlier in 2014, the WTTG  had their first collaboration using the same choreo-poem during a festival they organized called Legon International Poetry Festival (LIPFEST I). Then , it was the ‘Abibigroma Theatre group’ which is also the National Drama Group and the Official Drama Group of the University of Ghana.  Mr. David Quaye of the Department of Dance and Leander David of Casa Hispanica, Department of Modern Languages directed the first choreopoem with ‘Abibigroma’.

I was a guest at the Korlegonno Community Library where the stage was set for the choreo-poem against child mortality, “GBOBALOI”.

Before the choreopoem, “Gbobaloi” three musical performances were done by the said group. David who calls himself “Cambisco” performed “All of me” by Cameleon Ft. John Legend and “Girl I like your style” by Wiser. Then came Paul Armah who calls himself “Shatterzy”. He sang “Brand new things” by Calis Water. Then there was a dance-comedy titled “Chair show” –a scramble to sit on the only chair on stage. Each dancer used his wits to outwit the other. It was indeed a great comic relief.

WTTG PIC: Barley dance performance

A well-constructed display of contemporary Barley dance was exhibited by another group of youngsters who call themselves “High Phace Dance Crew”.

That night was a gathering of poets, entrepreneurs, young men, family and friends. The land breeze filled the theatre room while performances went on. The actors, dancers and singers were young men and women who lived in Korlegonno and its environs and have just finished their Basic Education Certificate Exam, awaiting their results. They all belonged to a group which calls itself the “Humble Forest Movie Production”.

The reason for the night which was the choreopoem, was also enacted. This time round, it was directed by Martin A. Legend, Abdul Aziz Abillah and Leander David.  It was a hilarious drama, though a tragic poem.

Yesterday it was the community of Korlegonno. Tomorrow Walk The Talk Group in collaboration with the Kathy Knowles Theatre Company will be in a community near you. Be on a watch out for other enactment which will change society positively.

The children are our future.
End child mortality:
Secure a future
Bright not a bleak.
