For those who still wonder about the noise that some of us make about poetry, know that it is because it doesn’t belongs to the future but now. This month of September has been saturated with lots of literary and cultural activities. You can sight the ALEWA festival which took place earlier this month in Legon to the just ended celebration of Storymoja Festival, the first ever of its kind in Ghana. Well that will not be all. Like the saying “all is well that ends well”, the month won’t end well until we see the 2nd celebration of LIPFEST at Legon.
This year’s 2nd Legon International poetry festival (Lipfest ii) takes off this September, the 28th and 29th at the Maison Française and Casa Hispánica V. A. O. Lamptey conference rooms located at University of Ghana, Legon. The Walk the Talk Club of University of Ghana, popularly known on social media platforms as Walk the Talk Group, is a writing and a performance group. In collaboration with University of Ghana School of Languages, School of Performing Arts and the Counselling and Placement Centre, this club will put up a series of activities to mark this two day celebration: an arts exhibition, writing and performance workshop and an evening concert.
While this poetry festival promotes the creative arts through its exhibitions, unlike other literary festivals I have seen, the concert night will utilize both local and international languages thereby promoting its study and patronage. It also advocates for the blend of poetry with music, drama and dance and hence the emphasis on choreopoems. This time round, in addition to the poetry performances, recitals and readings, there will be a choreopoem on each night by Leander David (Founder of the Walk The Talk movement). Watch out for a remix of “Gbobaloi” and “Agony of a state” on Wednesday, 28th September and Thursday, 29th September respectively.
Other activities are a writers and performers workshop to be led by Tope Omoniyi from Roehampton University on Wednesday and Mr. Quaye of the School of Performing Arts on Thursday. An arts exhibition will also be held around the venue. Don’t miss out on anything.
A poetry writing contest will also be launched on the first day of the festival. Interested persons are to send ten poems to walkthetalkgroup@yahoo.co.uk. Each poem should not be more than a page. The work of the first three winners will be published in print and online.
