We live in a world of changing fortunes and scenes. As if by design, we are also blessed with a very important protective layer which is the family system. The reason why our society can’t cope as such finds itself choked by the prevailing vices and unforeseen circumstances are because the family setup is broken down. For this reason, the JUPI Dream: improving the African arts and using it as a tool to bring interventions within the society, came to being. The NGO which has spearheaded this dream is the Jubilee Projections International (JP International). In collaboration with the Walk The Talk Group, one of its members, and also a literary and cultural club at the University of Ghana, Legon, they continue to bring about changes in the society.
One of such interventions is the JUPI Literary Project which gave birth to ICAFEST 2017, a festival of International Arts and Culture. In this year’s theme, we seek to voice out the voice of the voiceless. These include those neglected and have their homes on the streets as well as those living in the margins of society.
At the forefront of this cause is the University Of Ghana Language School which shares our vision of using the creative arts to promote the study of languages and also languages to promote the Ghanaian Creative Industry and Culture and ensuring tolerance among diverse cultures. Another partner in the academia is the University of Ghana Careers and Counselling Centre which shares our belief that students should develop themselves holistically both academically and in their creative talents especially with this upsurge of unemployment in the country. Out of the academia is the Didi Keke Foundation which is into language and cultural immersion trips and the Korle Gonno Community Library, one of a chain of Libraries currently springing up in the country.
This year’s festival takes off on the 8th of November, to the 11 of November, 2017 with the first event at the University of Ghana Maison Française. It will include performances from lecturers, students, old students with a cultural exhibition and a workshop which started in October.
Together we will reiterate our song
We will flow like the brook
Like lemon fragrance your nose will smell
With sediments clearer your eyes will see
From afar they will come
From above they will drop
To bathe their sweat
To quench their thirst
Yet will we flow cleaner like the brook
Ever like the lemon fragrance
